If you're travelling on V/Line, free travel will be offered on trains arriving at their destination after 6pm on New Years Eve and the first timetabled service on the morning of 1 January.

Group Traveller
As travel patterns and needs have changed this ticket will not be available from 1 January 2009. Customer service staff can advise customers of alternative ticket options.
The introduction of the Sunday Saver and the 5 x Weekend Daily Metcard means travel on the weekend is now cheaper for groups using these Metcards rather than the Group Traveller ticket.
Group Traveller tickets purchased prior to 1 January 2009 will remain valid for travel until further notice.
10 x 2 hour
The 10 x 2 hour will be available on buses.
Students
Students will be able to obtain a Victorian Student Pass that will be valid for travel on all metropolitan public transport, V/Line train services and bus services in more than 30 regional cities.
The introduction of the Victorian Student Pass in regional cities will ensure that customers in regional areas have the same travel benefits as metropolitan Melbourne.
With the raising of the child concession age by two years from next year, young people will no longer need a concession card to purchase a concession Metcard until they turn 17.
Regional bus
Customers across more than 30 regional cities will also enjoy a discount with the introduction of a monthly bus ticket.
The ticket provides unlimited travel within a regional city bus network and will cut down on travel times with a smaller number of tickets being purchased onboard buses.
Other ticketing announcements and offers for 2009 include:
5 x Seniors Daily Metcard is now available on board buses.
Four weekends of free bus travel in Zone 2. Buses are improving public transport accessibility in Melbourne’s outer suburbs and this initiative will encourage more Zone 2 travellers to consider travelling by bus.
A 5 per cent discount for people pre-purchasing their Metcards online will be offered periodically. The online discount will mean that customers get an even better price, making bulk purchasing, such as the 10 x 2 hour Metcard, even better value.
A free travel package for homeless youth will provide $50,000 worth of Metcards to a number of organisations to give homeless youth better access to essential services.
American Express, Diners Club and cheques will no longer be accepted.
